In 1792, 343 acres near "Bears Den" in the Blue Mountains was leased by Denny Martin Fairfax to “Stephen Castleman son of John Castleman, and William Castleman son of William Castleman“. Likely used as a "summer retreat" by the family during stifling valley heat waves as well as for hunting and timber harvests. The location was used during the civil war as a lookout by both sides at various times.
In 1850 James Castleman bought the property and then sold it to Sarah Fred Moreland in 1852. There are records of dated "Castleman" inscriptions carved into the rocks here, but I was unable to locate anything when I visited. Perhaps because I was scared to venture further than this view, which overlooks the ancestral lands that so many Castleman families occupied.
